West 麻豆精选 residents to vote on borrowing $8M for new fire hall

Council has approved using the Alternative Approval Process

Unanimous support from West 麻豆精选 council to use the Alternative Approval Process (AAP) to borrow $8 million to build a new fire hall in Lakeview Heights.

Firehall #32 has outlived its usefulness and is in desperate need of replacement according to city staff.

Residents opposed to borrowing the funds can complete and submit an elector response form which will be available at city hall or the city鈥檚 website.

The AAP period will open on Feb. 15 and close on Mar. 15 and more information about the process will be coming over the next few weeks.

If at least 10 per cent of approximately 28,098 electors object to long-term borrowing, then the AAP would fail and council would have to look at alternative funding or drop the project.

鈥淭his is definitely a huge need, not just a want,鈥 said Coun. Rick de Jong.

The total cost to replace Firehall #32 value is $14.3 million.

Other funding is coming from reserve funds ($3.8 million), parks development cost charges ($1.18 million), Growing Communities Fund ($1.17 million), and $150,000 from developer contributions.

Borrowing the $8 million will not result in new taxes for residents.

The new fire hall will be built at 860 Anders Road, just down the street from its current location on Ollala Road.

The City of 麻豆精选 used the AAP to ask residents to borrow $241 million to build new recreation facilities throughout the city.
