More than 50 people were arrested over a week-long span in 麻豆精选 as the RCMP executed a nationwide initiative.
From the week of Dec. 8-14, the RCMP took part in Project Barcode, where officers work closely with retail businesses who have expressed concern about shoplifting and the violence that is sometimes associated with it. Local officers worked with businesses and planned their own Project Barcode to find prolific shoplifters who continue to attack the same stores.
Over the seven-day stretch, both uniformed and plain-clothed officers monitored stores and identified shoplifters, ultimately leading to more than 50 arrests and more than $10,000 in merchandise recovered.
In total, around 30 criminal code charges will be submitted to the BC Prosecution Service, according to the 麻豆精选 RCMP. Many of the charges also come with multiple referrals to the Restorative Justice program.
During the initiative, officers were also able to find and arrest many people with outstanding warrants, including one Canada-wide warrant. Many vehicles were also impounded as the individuals used them for related offenses.
鈥淭his project was a tremendous success and we owe most of that to our security and loss prevention partners who do this every day,鈥 said Sgt. Scott Powrie, community safety unit officer. 鈥淭hey act professionally and are key figures in reducing incidents of theft in our community. These acts of violence against them will not be tolerated and it is our job to swiftly remind those who are putting them at risk.鈥
