Peachland council will ask the provincial government that the community be included under its short-term rental legislation.
Under the Short-Term Rental Accommodations Act (Bill 35) Peachland falls under exempt land 鈥渕eaning prescribed land where the principal residence requirement does not apply.鈥
At its Jan. 22 regular meeting Mayor Patrick Van Minsel said he will be bringing forward a motion at council鈥檚 Feb. 13 meeting.
鈥淭hat council request the Lieutenant Governor in Council to remove the District of Peachland from the exempt land so that the principal residence requirement applies to the District of Peachland.鈥
A principal residence is defined as a 鈥減lace in which an individual lives for a longer period in a calendar year than any other place.鈥
The legislation states homeowners cannot operate a short-term rental business unless it is their principal residence and/or one other unit on their property.
The mayor also pointed out that council has identified increased housing choice as a priority as part of its strategic plan in bringing the motion forward.
