The May long weekend brought a mix of rain and skydivers to the Shuswap Regional Airport.
Approximately 17 parachutists participated in Skydive Salmon Arm's Mayhem Boogie held at the airport May 16-19. Skydive Salmon Arm's drop zone manager Sara Langlois said the on-and-off rainfall throughout the event put a bit of a damper on things, as did the low cloud cover which at times prevented the Nomad Air Skyvan from taking people up.
"It was a bit of a slower weekend but we got lots of loads up," said Langlois, adding about 16 loads went up, each carrying 20 jumpers.
"We had a couple of tandems, we had a lot of just public show up and do a ride in the front seat of the plane," said Langlois. "We had a lot of kids, families that showed up with their kids that just wanted to watch the skydivers land so that was pretty cool."
The weekend's colder weather (which was below 0 at 10,000 feet), kept people from doing another record breaking naked tandem jump, as what happened at last year's May long weekend boogie.
"We have that planned for September – they’re going to try to beat their record when it’s a little nicer out," said Langlois. "But yeah, it was freezing. It’s also 20 degrees colder at 10,000 than it is on the ground, so it was in the minuses at some point. There was snow hitting the visors."
