The District of Sicamous will be providing a behind the scenes look at local government to a recent university grad through the Local Government Management Association LGMA) Internship Program.
In a June 20 media release, the district welcomed Carra Donaldson who will be interning for the year after Sicamous was confirmed as a participating community Nov. 28.
Donaldson graduated from Simon Fraser University with a bachelor's degree in sociology and a minor in sustainable development, and brings a "passion" for innovative city planning with a focus on environmental, accessibility and social needs.
"I love learning about how we are shaped and influenced by our social environments, so I'm excited to learn more about the culture in Sicamous," she said in the release. "I've never lived in a small town before, so there are a lot of new dynamics to observe."
Donaldson will be learning how different departments work together, and contributing on projects planned for the year ahead, with the district adding "we appreciate the fresh perspective and energy she brings to our team."
Donaldson said her current motto is "por qu茅, no?" which Spanish for "why not?", explaining she's quick to say yes to new plans and ideas. It also reflects her dream of being fluent in Spanish, a goal she's actively pursuing.
Outside the office, she loves to hike, and spent last summer in Banff where she hit the trails every weekend.
"I"m keen to discover the area, so if anyone has any recommendations, let me know," Donaldson added. "I just moved to Sicamous at the beginning of June and am really excited to meet everyone and get involved. Please say hi if you see me out and about."
The LGMA will contribute $42,000 towards Donaldson's pay and $5,000 for professional development, while Sicamous add $15,000 and another $5,000.
