A 麻豆精选 accessibility advocate has received the 2023 Medal of Good Citizenship.
Alongside 20 other B.C. residents, Spring Hawes has been recognized for her commitment to positive change and advocacy for inclusivity.
Hawes previously served as the president of Access in the Community for Equality from 2007-2014. She has worked as a city councillor in Invermere and sat on the board for Accessible Okanagan. More recently, Hawes volunteered with Spinal Cord Injury B.C. in the Central Okanagan to support individuals with disabilities.
Being a wheelchair user and on the board for Interior Health, Hawes is said to champion inclusivity in healthcare and offers advice to the province through a co-chair position with the Provincial Accessibility Committee.
The topic is a passionate one for Hawes after a mountain bike injury caused a severe spinal injury in 2005, leaving the mom and entrepreneur paralyzed.
The Medal of Good Citizenship is awarded to British Columbians who have acted in a selfless manner for the common good without the expectation of a reward.
