‘Coffee with a Cop’ returned in September and finished with its third event of the month on Thursday.
The 鶹ѡ RCMP were at Model Bean in Rutland to answer the public’s questions for about an hour and a half from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.
“It’s been good, we’ve had a lot of people come out and ask a bunch of questions about the neighbourhood, and things that are changing,” said Const. Mike Della-Paolera. “We’ve been able to answer most of them and we’re going to be doing some follow-up with some of the questions.”
Some of the concerns Rutland residents asked about were increased crime in town and recent changes in government offices that have moved into 鶹ѡ and brought new people to town.
In total, seven officers were at the coffee shop taking questions from residents, who were surprised that the RCMP were paying for their morning coffee.
On top of Rutland residents, the RCMP talked to a couple who are currently travelling for a living. This couple sold their home in Texas, drove all the way to Alaska, and are now heading south again. They just happened to be in the coffee shop Thursday morning and were interested as to why the police were there.
In the past, ‘Coffee with a Cop’ was held from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. but after making it any hour earlier in September, they found the events were busier and more people engaged in conversation.
“We learned that people enjoy an early morning coffee and that’s when they’re more available to have a conversation, before their job or their day starts,” said Della-Paolera.
Thursday’s event was the last one for September but the RCMP plans to bring the community-engaging event back in November. While they haven’t locked down the dates and local coffee shops yet, they are planning to also hold events in West 鶹ѡ and Lake Country.
