Coldstream volunteers attack invasive weed in Kal Park

Hands needed for plant pull of garlic mustard Friday, May 23

A garlic mustard emergency has exploded in Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park and volunteers are being enlisted to join the fight.

Join the Friends of Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park (FKLPP) for one or two hours over the next 10 days as the plants, about two feet tall, are being pulled out.

The first weed pull takes place Friday, May 23 at 1 p.m.; meet on the trail above the green water tower at junction with the Coming Around the Mountain Trail.

Bring gloves, water and sunscreen as troops head east to Bunnies Trail for a maximum two-hour attack.

"Only volunteers can stop the deadly spread of garlic mustard – many volunteers," said Greig Crockett, FKLPP vice president.

If you are interested in participating in the weed pull, email info@kalamalkapark.ca

"We will contact volunteers with the time and location of other organized pulls," said Crockett.

Garlic mustard is listed by the province as an invasive species that dominates its area, displacing beneficial vegetation and threatening ecosystems and at-risk species.
