Less than two years after it was created, Penticton's newest winter festival has been honoured as among the province's best.

The BC Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA) has awarded Penticton with the 2025 Events and Festivals Award of Excellence, in recognition of Valley First Frost Fest.

One of just six provincial honours it presents each year, BCRPA says the award "recognizes innovative events that improve individual and community connectedness, support social and physical well-being, and inspire engagement."

Kelsey Johnson, Penticton's general manager of community services, said the city is "beyond thrilled" to receive the award.

Johnson also thanked the partners, sponsors and volunteers behind the scenes who have made the event possible since its inception in January 2024.

"Valley First Frost Fest attracted thousands of participants and is fast becoming a destination event, injecting vibrancy into our community and bringing people together during the winter months," Johnson added. "We look forward to next year and continuing to create memorable experiences for Penticton."

BCRPA announced Penticton's winter carnival as the winner of the award on May 9, during an event in Whistler.

鈥淭he Frost Fest Winter Carnival is a shining example of how events can strengthen community connection and create spaces where everyone feels they belong,鈥 said Katie Fenn, BCRPA CEO. 鈥淭hrough innovation, partnerships, and a strong focus on inclusivity, the City of Penticton has created an event that brings lasting benefits to their community.鈥

The winter carnival is a three-day event that features the Peach City Rail Jam, family fun zone, hockey activities with the Penticton Vees, Frosty Toes Polar Bear Swim, Frostbite Film Night and hot-air balloon glow-up.

It has run in January over the last two years, offering free and low-cost activities across the city's downtown core.
