Ostrich killed at Edgewood, B.C. farm ahead of looming CFIA cull

Second killing in 2 months at Universal Ostrich farm

A second ostrich has been killed at the Edgewood farm that is making global headlines in its fight to save the birds.

Universal Ostrich spokesperson Katie Pasitney said Friday, May 23 one of the birds was found dead.

"Pending investigation, at about 1 or 2 in the morning we heard a drone flying over and this morning one of our big males, there's an entry wound and an exit wound," said Pasitney, choking back tears.

This death follows a March 21 killing of another large ostrich, Sarah.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has ordered the killing of the entire herd of nearly 400 ostrich at the farm after it declared an avian influenza outbreak Dec. 31, 2024 at Universal Ostrich.

A total of 69 ostriches died at the farm in the initial weeks but none since as Pasitney explains the birds have developed herd immunity and fully recovered.

Due to the unique situation, the farm fought the CFIA order in federal court, but their case was not supported by the Justice.

Universal Ostrich has retained a new lawyer and put CFIA on notice that they will be expecting an appeal.

"We feel very hopeful with that," said Pasitney Friday, surrounded by approximately 50 supporters camped out at the farm.

In the meantime, the owners (Pasitney's mother Karen Espersen and partner David Pasitney) are fearfully waiting for CFIA.

"They're being very aggressive in nature," said Pasitney. "Saying, 'we will come without notice.'

"What reaction do you expect to get from that?"

More supporters are expected at the farm this weekend as people from all over are expected with entertainers lined up, food prepared for all and a large fire to keep warm.

RCMP came to the farm Wednesday, May 21 to provide a wellness check. No arrests were made.

But RCMP from Nakusp have been in the area to speak with a local resident who was driving erratically down the farm road, Pasitney confirmed.
