After the first two weekends of the regular season, the West Â鶹¾«Ñ¡ Warriors are tied atop the Interior Division.
The weekend however started with the team’s first loss of the season on Friday, Sept. 29 when they fell 2-1 to the Cranbrook Bucks at Royal LePage Place.
Captain Brennan Nelson scored the Warriors’ only goal of the game, on the powerplay, late in the second period to tie the game 1-1. Cranbrook struck early in the third period when Oskar Cederqvist scored the eventual game-winning goal to give the Bucks the 2-1 lead.
Warriors goaltender Rorke Applebee made 24 saves on the loss.
At Friday’s game, it was also ‘Community Heroes Night’ to honour all the firefighters and first responders that helped tackle the Grouse Complex wildfires during August and September. The money from the game’s 50/50 went to the Central Okanagan Fire Relief Fund.
West Â鶹¾«Ñ¡ turned their game around on Saturday night when they welcomed the Trail Smoke Eaters to town, beating them for the second time this season, this time by the score of 5-3.
In the first period, after Trail made it 1-0, Warriors forward Felix Caron scored 21 seconds later to tie the game. It was his first goal of the season.
West Â鶹¾«Ñ¡ then struck in quick succession early in the second period, getting goals 38 seconds apart from Jackson Kyrkostas and Caden Kemkaran-Humble. For both of them, it was their first career BCHL goals.
As the Warriors led 3-2 going into the third period, Stouffville, Ontario native Jack Pridham scored his second goal of the season to make it 4-2 for West Â鶹¾«Ñ¡.
Trail made it 4-3 but Michael Salandra’s empty net goal for the Warriors made it 5-3 to put the game away late in the third period. It was also his second goal of the campaign.
Caron and Kyrkostas both collected an assist as well and they have multi-point nights.
Another first on the night was in net as Warriors goalie Matthew Dellarusso earned his first career BCHL win in his first career game. He made 18 saves in the win.
With a loss and a win on the weekend, the Warriors are now 3-1 on the season. With that record, they are tied with the Salmon Arm Silverbacks for first in the Interior Division.
And that is who the Warriors will also take on next. The Warriors and Silverbacks will play a home-and-home series on Friday, Oct. 6 and Saturday, Oct. 7 with Friday night at Salmon Arm and Saturday at Royal LePage Place in West Â鶹¾«Ñ¡. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. both nights.
