A true international field of 40 of the top curling teams from across the world traveled to Vernon over the weekend for the Prestige Hotels and Resorts Curling Classic.
The four-day event (Sept. 28-Oct. 1) featured teams playing in a round-robin style tournament, fighting for a $28,500 purse.
In the women’s competition, four groups of five teams each played each other, with the top two in each group advancing to the final eight bracket.
The defending champions, Team Brown, led by Kamloops’ Corryn Brown, showcased their prowess throughout, advancing to the final after defeating South Korea’s Eun ji Gim in the semifinals, 8-4.
Brown would be met in the finals by China’s Rui Wang, who defeated fellow countrywoman Yu Han, 6-4.
Wang’s team scored four throughout the second, third and fourth ends of the final to set a large lead that would never be relinquished, with Wang winning, 6-2.
Also on the silver winning Kamloops team was third Erin Pincott, second Jennifer Armstrong and lead Samantha Fisher.
Among the countries competing in the women’s draw were South Korea (four), Switzerland (one), Canada (nine), China (two) and Japan (four).
The men’s competition had two local Vernon teams led by Rob Nobert and Tyler Orme compete, however neither quartest was able to make it out of the round-robin.
In the semifinals, Victoria’s Catlin Schneider’s team played against Âé¶¹¾«Ñ¡â€™s Jeff Richard.
The match would come down to the final end, as Richard, despite having the hammer, was unable to slide his rock close enough to the button, giving the win to Schneider.
Meanwhile, New Westminster’s Brent Pierce’s team would dominate against Japan’s Yusuke Morozumi, needing just three ends to advance to the final, with a 9-0 victory.
Pierce would easily win over Schneider in the final, 8-1.
The men’s draw had rinks from Korea, Japan, and China.
