Golfing all day and raising money for a good cause, could it get any better?
On Tuesday, June 17, five members of the Okanagan Golf Club took part in the 20th annual PGA of BC Golfathon for ALS, playing golf for nearly 11 hours to raise money ALS Society of BC.
Okanagan Golf Club head professional Lee Ranger, along with Ian Walker, Oliver Rizun, Sean Nault and Scott Morin teed off at 4:30 a.m. with a goal of raising $7,000.
For Ranger, taking part in the event had a special meaning.
鈥淭he day my father told me he was diagnosed with ALS, I was committed to this cause," said Ranger. 鈥淚t was a small way for me to support what he was going through."
Throughout the day, Ranger, Nault, and Walker played 100 holes each while Morin and Rizun played 67 and 52 respectively. The highlight of the day came in their fourth round of the day on the par 5, 12th hole of the Quail Course when four players combined for a cumulative score of six under after recording two eagles and two birdies on the hole.
The most important number of the day came at the end of the day when it was revealed they raised $11,000, shattering their goal and record by around $5,000. Those interested can still donate to the Okanagan Golf Club's Golfathon .
鈥淭he members at (the) club have been tremendously supportive over the years and my PGA staff have been with me for the entire ride. Thanks to them all," added Ranger.
This was the club's 13th time participating in the event. Over that time, over $62,000 has been raised for ALS.
鈥淭he Golfathon for ALS always hits a little different at The Okanagan Golf Club鈥, said ALS BC executive director Donald Miyazaki. 鈥淟ee and his team raise the bar each year and the support they receive from the community is special. It鈥檚 not only a great way for them to annually honour Lee鈥檚 late father David鈥檚 courageous battle with ALS, but they also benefit countless patients living with ALS who call the 麻豆精选 area home."
A group at Gallagher's Canyon Golf Club also participated in the event on Tuesday, June 24.
