Shuswap Search & Rescue (SSAR) needed air support to get a hiker safely off a ledge after conditions left him stranded.

On Tuesday afternoon, July 22, crews were called to Bastion Mountain where an "adventurous climber" had a narrow escape.

"He had hiked several hours above Sunnybrae, but became trapped on shifting scree above a steep cliff band and had to call for rescue," SSAR member Jan Crerar said in a media release.

The local team was able to access mutual aid from the helicopter winch team out of Vernon that located and airlifted the subject who was uninjured.

Shuswap search manager Steve Horton said the climber was "wise to stay put and call for help once he realized the danger he was in, and was able to provide coordinates of his position.

In addition to the Vernon SAR and manager Leigh Pearsson, the team also recognized Sunnybrae Bible Camp that hosted the support ground search team – "Plan B" volunteers – and everyone who helped get the climber safely off the mountain.

This isn't the first call on Bastion that SSAR has responded to this year after an incident on April 21 in which 17-year-old Jonathon Bruce died after falling from a 200-foot cliff on the mountain.
