Motor vehicle incidents in Vernon have seen a slight uptick in 2024, according to recent data from ICBC.

The 3,380 incidents are the third most in the Southern Interior (behind Â鶹¾«Ñ¡ and Kamloops respectively), and up from 3,365 in 2023.

ICBC released its 2020–2024 crash data for the Southern Interior on Tuesday, June 2. The report includes all reported vehicle incidents on roads and intersections involving moving vehicles.

Incidents were separated into two categories: property damage and casualty, the latter referring to incidents that resulted in injury or death.

The insurer also identified the city's top intersection hotspots. The intersection of Highway 97 and 25th Avenue leads the list, with 214 incidents since 2020, including 54 involving casualties.

Meanwhile, the Highway 97 and 43rd Avenue intersection was the highest for casualties, with 70 among 202 total incidents.

Rounding out the top five in the most dangerous intersections in the city from the past five years are:

  • 27th Street and 48th Avenue - 158 incidents, 65 casualties.
  • 27th Street and Anderson Way turning lane - 97 incidents, 45 casualties.
  • Highway 6 and Middleton Way - 81 incidents, 38 casualties

Tuesday was the busiest day of the week for incidents, with 610 in 2024, while Sunday had the fewest with 334.

As for time of day, the peak period for incidents was between noon and 2:59 p.m., where 984 incidents occurred.

Interestingly, 233 of the 3,380 incidents in 2024 involved animals.

With those stats in mind, drivers may want to steer clear of Highway 97 and 25th Avenue — especially around noon on Tuesdays.
