Pool and hot tub closed in Summerland

Part needed for pool repair must be shipped from Europe

The pool and hot tub at the Summerland Aquatic and Fitness Centre are temporarily closed for repairs.

The blower motor for the boiler has failed and requires replacement, a message from the District of Summerland states.

Parts have been ordered and will be installed once they arrive.

The cost of this work will be less than $10,000, said Lori Mullin, director of community services for the district.

However, the parts are coming from Europe and bringing them to Summerland will take time. As a result, pool programs have been cancelled until May 19. The length of the pool closure is not known because of the transportation involved.

The fitness room at the facility still remains open.

The Summerland Aquatic and Fitness Centre was constructed in 1976 and while the building has been expanded twice, the pool and hot tub remain original.

For several years, municipal staff have said all major building, mechanical, electrical and pool systems have exceeded their expected useful life.

A referendum to replace the aging facility was held in November 2023. In that referendum, for borrowing up to $50 million to replace the aging facility, 58 per cent of those who voted were opposed.

Since that time, the facility has required work, including roof repairs. The roof work came in at a cost of $350,000, considerably higher than earlier estimates of $100,000 for this work.

Other minor repairs, including dealing with leaks, have also occurred.

鈥淲e鈥檙e still continuing to repair things as they fail,鈥 Mullin said.

The district has applied for a grant of up to $3 million to retrofit and upgrade the aging facility.
