Work began May 20 to remove the old, deteriorating cover of the S.S. Sicamous’ iconic paddle-wheel in order to restore and repair it. Fundraising for the project is also underway.

Just a day after the 111th anniversary of its launch into Okanagan Lake, work has begun on a major rebuilding project on Penticton's S.S. Sicamous.

The historic steam-powered paddle-wheeler has had its old, deteriorating wheel-cover removed in order for it to be restored and rebuilt with one that's brand new and more resilient.

Work began May 20, with Scott Mayhew Contracting removing the old boards from the existing wheel cover.

The project is expected to cost about $84,000 according to Katie Pereira, the general manager of the S.S. Sicamous Marine Heritage Society.

Over the years the wheel cover has deteriorated due to time and exposure to the elements, and now the restoration is critical, the society said in a press release.

So far, the society has raised almost $8,000 in community donations for the project. The society has also received a $42,000 gaming grant for the restoration.

The remaining funds are now being sought through a fundraising campaign.

The project's total budget includes money for contingencies, and for a cork spray to be applied once the wheel cover is rebuilt to preserve the wood better than paint could.

The reconstruction of the wheel cover, in order to keep the ship as authentic as possible, will see it rebuilt and repaired using historically accurate methods and materials.

The society is looking for local businesses and organizations willing to sponsor the project, with recognition displayed on site and during events, and for contributions of any size from members of the community.

Donations can be made in person at the museum aboard the ship, or online through the CanadaHelps page for the wheel cover campaign.

The society is also looking for volunteers willing to donate their time to support their events and fundraising.
