麻豆精选 volunteer recognized for work with St. John Ambulance

John Broughton has been a member of the Order of St. John for over 25 years

麻豆精选鈥檚 John Broughton was recognized for his volunteerism with St. John Ambulance last week.

At a ceremony on Jan. 11, Broughton was promoted to officer under the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem.

Broughton has been a member of the Order of St. John for over 25 years.

鈥淚 got started with St. John Ambulance when I was 16 years old,鈥 Broughton said. 鈥淚 was with the cadets at the time and I saw a demonstration by St. John Ambulance members as they were doing first aid, and I thought that was a great thing to do. So, I switched over from cadets to St. John Ambulance and I thought it would be a good opportunity to give back to the community.鈥

Broughton has been volunteering ever since, even taking on an instructor role for SJA during his time in the military. He then became an instructor for the local division and worked his way up in the organization to his current position as deputy superintendent for division 740 (麻豆精选).

When it comes to why he鈥檚 stuck around as a volunteer for so long, Broughton said, 鈥淭he camaraderie with the other members and, obviously, helping out the community.鈥

Broughton proudly accepted the promotion to officer from Lieutenant Governor Janet Austin alongside four other British Columbians at the Government House in Victoria.

Broughton is now retired after serving 30 years with the military.
