The Itcha Lake wildfire is currently 17,000 hectares in size.

A wildfire in the West Cariboo has quadrupled in size.

In a Wednesday morning update from BC Wildfire Service (BCWS), the Itcha Lake wildfire, about 200 kilometres west of Quesnel, is now an estimated 17,000 hectares in size.

The blaze was discovered on Wednesday, Aug. 27, nearly three km east of Itcha Lake in Itcha Ilgachuz Provincial Park. The park is currently closed because of the fire. It was suspected that the fire was caused by lightning.

BCWS states that crews on scene have set up structure protection on the eastern flank, while other firefighters are mopping up around structures.

According to the BC Parks , there are two cabins available for public use. It's unknown at this time if they have been affected by the fire. Black Press Media has reached out to BCWS to confirm if the cabins are intact.

Ground crews, an incident management team, aviation, and structure protection are all on scene battling the blaze.
