A fatal, two-vehicle collision east of Sicamous on Highway 1 Friday, Aug. 29 resulted in the death of an Ontario woman and closed the road for much of the day.

A fatal vehicle crash on Highway 1 east of Sicamous resulted in the death of an Ontario woman, leading into the September long weekend.

At 7 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 29, Sicamous RCMP responded to a two-vehicle crash involving a semi truck and a Chevrolet hatchback car on Highway 1 near Solsqua.

"The driver of the Chevrolet, a 34-year-old female from Ontario, was pronounced deceased at the scene," Sgt. Muray McNeil said in a media release. "The driver of the semi truck was not injured."

The collision occurred on a two-lane section of the highway with a double solid yellow line, with dash camera footage police seized from another driver travelling behind the victim showing the westbound car crossing the line into the path of the semi.

"The impact occurred in the eastbound lane and there was no time for the driver of the semi truck to avoid the collision," McNeil added.

The highway was closed for several hours, re-opening around 2 p.m., with a detour on Cambie Solsqua Road for non-commercial vehicles to allow some of the heavily congested holiday traffic to get through.
