A contract for on-demand bus service for the 麻豆精选 Regional Transit System (KRTS) has been awarded to a U.S.-based company.
VIA Mobility, headquartered in New York City, will provide the technology that will first be offered in 麻豆精选鈥檚 Crawford neighbourhood.
Transit riders will be able to use a mobility app or phone-in option to book a trip for a time that works for them, instead of following conventional pre-planned routes and schedules.
The system will operate in a network of designated stops within the Crawford area to provide transit when customers need it.
Once in service, customers can request a ride that begins and ends within the Crawford area, or to and from the Mission Recreation Transit Exchange.
Other benefits may include:
- shorter wait and travel times;
- direct route trips;
- increased access to areas within the neighbourhood that have limited transit service;
- increased service availability during off-peak times, particularly during the evenings and weekends.
On-demand is expected to launch in spring 2024 and will replace the Route 15 service currently offered in the area operated by Transdev Canada.
If successful, on-demand service could expand to other areas of 麻豆精选 as well as other communities around the province.
