The proposed rezoning of a mobile home park in West 鶹ѡ, which may force dozens of people to look for a new place to live, is going to a public hearing.

Several residents of Shady Acres Park showed up at council’s Dec. 12 meeting to hear the rezoning proposal be given first and second readings.

The city received correspondence citing concerns about a shortage of housing, compensation, assessment of homes and fears of losing quality of life.

“There is a lot of content here and it is a challenging situation,” Coun. Stephen Johnston said. “I just wanted to address those that are in attendance here and acknowledge that we do understand the severity of this application as it pertains to relocation of housing.”

The land owner wants to rezone the park at 2355 Marshall Road, just off Highway 97 next to Stevens Road, to light industrial.

The park is home to 27 units, 10 of which are owned and the rest are rented. There is also one home on the property which is rented.

Under the Mobile Home Tenancy Act, the 10 owners will be given 12 months notice and $20,000 in compensation. They can also apply for further compensation if eligible.

Those who are renting will receive four months’ notice, one month’s rent as compensation, and $1,000 in relocation assistance.

Mayor Gord Milsom, the only other council member to speak on the application, said he sympathized with residents.

“However, I would point out that the property owner has met city policy guidelines…and has met, and in some cases, surpassed the responsibilities of provincial legislation.”

Council voted unanimously to send the rezoning application to a public hearing.
