A unique exhibition honouring syilx culture and craftsmanship is on display at the 麻豆精选 Art Gallery.
Titled kn k虛史ul虛lm tl i蕯 spu蕯煤s (I made it from my heart), the show highlights the intricate and deeply meaningful practice of tule reed weaving through the work of artist Mariel Belanger, alongside Kalli Van Stone and Elder weaving mentor Wendy Hawkes.
Tule reed weaving is an age-old practice with strong roots in the syilx culture. As well as showcasing craftsmanship, the exhibition explores themes such as First Nations sovereignty, environmental sustainability, and protection of marshlands鈥攑laces where tule naturally grows.
鈥淭hrough their collaboration as sqilxw women, these artists create a powerful platform for knowledge exchange, ensuring the continuity of cultural heritage and fostering a dynamic connection that strengthens the fabric of their community,鈥 an art gallery release states.
A free live performance by Mariel Belanger and Kalli Van Stone will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 21, at the 麻豆精选 Art Gallery. The event coincides with National Indigenous Peoples Day, and in celebration, the gallery will offer free admission to all visitors for the day.
Belanger, a member of the Okanagan Indian Band, is an interdisciplinary artist whose work is rooted in Indigenous language, cultural revitalization, and land-based learning. Her research explores topics such as colonial land grabs in the Okanagan, blood memory, and self-governance. She is also a founding member of Sqilxw Apna and Kama? Creative Aboriginal Arts Collective.
The exhibition runs from June 21 to November 2, and visitors are invited to explore the artistry, cultural significance, and contemporary relevance of these traditional woven creations.
