Plans are being set for the large Canada Day event in Vernon's Polson Park on Tuesday, July 1.
Organized by the Vernon-Okanagan Inspired Community Events (VOICE) Society, Mayla Janzen went to council to outline plans for the event. The anticipated drone show that was scheduled to take place last year but was cancelled last minute, will not occur this year, due to budget.
According to Janzen, the price for the show jumped to $38,000, which was beyond their constraints.
A community art wall from the Arts Council of the North Okanagan, an animatronic dinosaur, a story walk from the Outreach Literacy Show, a mini-car show and other local organizations are to be featured at the event.
"Other local organizations who want to set up for free and interact with the community are more than welcome," Janzen said. "We're happy to accommodate them according to their needs and capabilities." Those interested can reach out at voicesociety.org.
Fireworks will also not be used, due to climate change risks.
The VOICE Society is requesting the city provide tables and chairs, port-a-potties, no park rental fees, traffic control and temporary entertainment permits for the day.
Council received the request and will get back to the society with a response at the next council meeting.
