"Somehow a cookie just tastes better with a smile on it," said Kimberly Lockwood.
Lockwood and her mom Dawn Fiacco are owners of Tim Horton's location in West 麻豆精选, 麻豆精选 and Vernon. Fiacco said this year's spring Smile Cookie Campaign was a huge success, bringing in about 150 per cent more than other years.
The Smile Cookie Campaign runs twice a year. "Over the years, we've played with different price points with the cookies," Lockwood explained. "This year we did $2 where 100 per cent of those proceeds directly impacts our charity of choice."
The mother-daughter duo and other Tim Horton's staff went down to the YMCA Child Care centre on Gordon Drive in 麻豆精选 the afternoon of May 27 to present a cheque to YMCA staff for $93,896. The funds will support the YMCA of Southern Interior BC with its Healthy Snack Program, ensuring kids in their care are provided a healthy afternoon snack.
"When I first found out the number I was shocked and read it twice," said Senior Manager of Child Care for the YMCA of Southern Interior BC Heather Campbell.
Campbell said the increased cost of living can make it difficult for some families to provide children with nutritious options. The snacks consist of items from two food groups and Campbell added that the funds help accommodate for kids with dietary restrictions.
Funds from the campaign will directly support the 15 YMCA Child Care locations between Lake Country and Penticton.
Lockwood, Fiacco and other local Tim Horton's staff aren't stopping there. The owners will be at the YMCA Cycle for Strong Kids fundraiser in downtown 麻豆精选 on Sunday, June 1 to hand out snacks.
Cycle for Strong Kids raises funds for YMCA child and youth development programs. The event starts at 10 a.m. in Stuart Park and includes four riding sessions. Space is still available for the final ride at 1 p.m. Learn more about the YMCA and its programs or register to ride at ymcasibc.ca.
