PHOTOS: Lake Country Fire Department serves up FireSmart tips at open house

Kids got to spray a fire hose and meet Sparky

Fun was had by all at the Lake Country Fire Department's FireSmart Day and Open House on Saturday, May 24.

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., residents attended the free event at Station #71 on Okanagan Centre Road East to learn about potentially life-saving fire safety tips, meet fire fighters, explore the firehall and more.

Children in attendance got to spray the fire hose and explore the inside of a fire truck as well as meet Sparky the Fire Dog.

Experts were on hand at the FireSmart Info Booth to talk about simple, effective steps residents can take to make their homes more resilient to wildfires. There was also information on emergency preparedness, smoke alarms, and evacuation planning. Additionally, there was a Fire Safety House, which offered a fun and interactive way to practice emergency exit drills.

Representatives from BC Ambulance, Bylaw Services, RCMP, Central Okanagan Search and Rescue, and the Salvation Army were all on hand to discuss their roles in the community and how they support the community during emergencies.

The Lake Country Rotary Club was also in attendance, serving free hot dogs to residents.
