Okanagan students nab medals at B.C. Skills competition

Students from across the Okanagan displayed their excellence at the Skills Canada competition.

Okanagan students brought out their best skills at a provincial competition.

Students from across the region won a bevy of medals in science, technology, business, and trades at the 2025 Skills Canada B.C. Provincial Competition. 

Hosted at the Abbotsford Trade and Exhibition Centre on Wednesday, April 16, the Skills Canada competition brought together top students and apprentices from across B.C. to compete in hands-on, timed challenges designed to mirror real-world work environments.

Three A.L. Fortune students from Enderby swept the podium in the autobody repair competition. First went to Sy Korf, silver to his brother Zak and bronze to Jon Wall. Additionally, A.L Fortune's Nya Korpa won silver in the electrical wiring competition.

麻豆精选's Ryder Starling from Rutland Secondary won gold in the cabinet making competition, with Mount Boucherie student Merrick James Oler coming in third. 

Two students from Chase Secondary came silver and bronze in the junior skills sumo robot competition. John Tompkis took second while Jensen Webster finished third. 

Additionally, nine Okanagan College students took home medals.

鈥淐ompetitions like Skills Canada reflect the dedication and drive of OC students, as well as the exceptional mentorship they receive from their instructors,鈥 said Stephen Spears, dean of trades and apprenticeship at OC. 鈥淏ehind each medal is a story of countless hours of preparation, hands-on practice, and unwavering support.鈥

The gold medallists will now advance to the Skills Canada National competition in WInnipeg this June, where they'll compete against provincial champions from across the country.
