Mission Creek playground opening celebrates commitment to accessibility

An upgraded playground in Mission Creek Regional Park is now an inviting space for children of all abilities.

The updated park, unveiled with a grand opening on Tuesday (Aug. 19), features accessible equipment, sensory-friendly zones, and rubber surfaces that ensure safe and easy access for everyone.

鈥淭his playground renewal is a powerful example of what happens when we listen to our community and take action,鈥 said Loyal Wooldridge, Regional District Central Okanagan (RDCO) Board Chair. 鈥淏y prioritizing accessibility and inclusion, we鈥檝e created a space where children of all ages and abilities can play, connect, and feel welcome.鈥

The playground鈥檚 design was shaped by extensive community input, including feedback from parents, caregivers, educators, and children, according to an RDCO media release.

鈥淎ccessibility, safety, community, and fun were top priorities, and the final result reflects those values at every turn.鈥

There are wheelchair-accessible features and quiet low-stimulation areas for children with sensory sensitivities. 

鈥淭he playground stands as a testament to the RDCO鈥檚 commitment to listening to its residents and creating spaces that reflect their needs," the release says.
