Jessie Simpson will be celebrating big for his birthday this year.
The Kamloops resident is having a birthday bash on July 5 at Moccasin Square Gardens ahead of his actual birthday on July 26.
Every birthday Simpson celebrates is another where he defied the odds, according to his mom Sue.
Simpson was 18 when he was beaten into a coma. The then-teenager was walking back to a friend鈥檚 home after drinking at a graduation party in Kamloops on June 19, 2016. Simpson stumbled into the backyard of Kristopher Teichrieb, who attacked Jessie with a metal baseball bat.
Despite being declared brain-dead in hospital, Simpson woke up from his coma after 11 months. He has required round-the-clock care ever since, spending most of his days in a long-term care facility in Kamloops.
Sue is excited to host a birthday bash this year to celebrate Simpson turning 28 and is inviting the community to come meet her son.
"We've had a lot of parties at home and we've had them at his nursing home," Sue said about previous birthday celebrations. "He gets to go somewhere. He gets to get out and be surprised. We're pretty excited for it."
The birthday celebration will include cake and non-alcoholic refreshments.
"We have an Elvis impersonator and we also have Acoustic KISS," Sue said about the entertainment line-up for the event.
Tickets are $30 each and be purchased by emailing Sue at suesimpson97@gmail.com.
Anyone unable to attend the party is encouraged to send a birthday card. Birthday wishes can be mailed to: Jessie Simpson PO BOX 233 Savona B.C. V0K 2J0.
